わたしたちの日常において、「北と南」という方角があるのは当たり前のことです。

コンパスを使う際に南北がそれぞれどちらの方角を指すかというのは、不動の事実のように思えます。

地球に​このような地磁気が存在するのは、地球のコア部分で液体状の鉄が複雑に動いているからだと言われています。金属電子が動くことで電場と磁場が発生し、「北」と「南」が生じている。

​

そして、地球が積み重ねてきた長い長い時間の中で、南北は何度か正反対に逆転してきたことがわかっています。

ヒトの知覚を超えたタイムスケールの中で、地球はまるで生きている存在のように、ゆっくりとしかし絶え間なく変わり続けています。

​

本作immutable？では、赤い針がコンパスのように常に北を指し示しています。

常に？

もしかしたら「北」が揺らぎ、針がその方向を見失うことがあるかもしれません。

In our everyday lives, it feels natural to think of “north and south” as fixed directions.

When we use a compass, the fact that the needle points toward north and south seems like an unchanging truth.

It is said that Earth’s magnetic field exists because liquid iron in the planet’s core moves in complex ways. As the electrons in the metal flow, they generate electric and magnetic fields, giving rise to what we call “north” and “south.”

Over Earth’s vast history, however, scientists have discovered that these poles have reversed many times, switching completely from one side to the other.

On a timescale far beyond human perception, Earth itself seems almost like a living being—changing slowly, yet ceaselessly.

In this work immutable?, a red needle points north, like a compass.

Always?

Perhaps “north” is not as stable as it seems. Perhaps the needle might waver, losing its sense of direction.
